Purpose

These services are geared to provide students and their support teams with information on:

  • required academic or vocational training for various vocations
  • the location of specific training programs
  • college enrollment procedures
  • financial aid application procedures
  • eligibility requirements and application procedures for campus-based disability services

Additionally, Pre-ETS counselors may arrange campus tours to familiarize students with campus life.

Counselor Role: Navigator

Here, the counselor assumes the role of navigator, ensuring the students have all the information they need to make an informed choice about the school they choose to attend. Together, they can determine which school offers:
  • courses necessary for their chosen vocational goals
  • on-campus disability support services
  • scholarship assistance

Supporting Evidence

  • The primary roadblock to successful secondary transitions for youth with disabilities is a lack of knowledge of and understanding of postsecondary resources. According to Peterson, Van Dycke, Roberson, & Sedaghat (2013), Knowledge deficits include a lack of knowledge about disability rights and eligibility criteria for disability services.

  • Students with disabilities (80%) who graduate from college achieve employment at a rate equal to their non-disabled peers (79%) (Kessler Foundation National Employment and Disability Survey, 2020). This finding is an improvement from the data reported by the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services in their Harris eSurvey of 2000, wherein it was revealed that 67% of college graduates with disabilities secured employment compared to 73% of college graduates without disabilities.

  • Studies have found that receiving assistance with the accommodation process from caring individuals is the most critical factor in college students' success (Graham-Smith & Lafayette, 2004; Balcazar et al., 2012). GP-2
