In the metaphor wherein "group" is likened to a mothership, the VR counselor can be likened to a First Mate. The First Mate serves second to the Captain and is responsible for the overall well-being of the ship (group environment) and crew.
The First Mate:
Prepares for each journey, familiarizing oneself with the crew and planning activities to help them achieve their goals
Oversees procedures, helping the group adopt rules and expectations to ensure a successful journey
Facilitates navigation to ensure group members have the information needed to make informed decisions
Promotes morale by offering ongoing support and encouragement
Demonstrates positive and trustworthy behavior
Fosters a sense of belonging by listening and learning about each member and remembering their names, interests, concerns, and celebrating members' birthdays and achievements
Models humility by demonstrating that it's okay to admit when wrong and to graciously accept an apology when wronged by another.
Solicits solutions and possible consequences of each solution from the group in the face of a problem. The First Mate will not choose a solution; that choice is up to the captains in training.
The ship and its crew are in good hands with a good First Mate.
