In the metaphor wherein "group" is likened to a mothership, the VR counselor can be likened to a First Mate. The First Mate serves second to the Captain and is responsible for the overall well-being of the ship (group environment) and crew.

  • Prepares for each journey, familiarizing oneself with the crew and planning activities to help them achieve their goals

  • Oversees procedures, helping the group adopt rules and expectations to ensure a successful journey

  • Facilitates navigation to ensure group members have the information needed to make informed decisions

  • Promotes morale by offering ongoing support and encouragement

  • Demonstrates positive and trustworthy behavior

  • Fosters a sense of belonging by listening and learning about each member and remembering their names, interests, concerns, and celebrating members' birthdays and achievements

  • Models humility by demonstrating that it's okay to admit when wrong and to graciously accept an apology when wronged by another.

  • Solicits solutions and possible consequences of each solution from the group in the face of a problem. The First Mate will not choose a solution; that choice is up to the captains in training.

The ship and its crew are in good hands with a good First Mate.
